The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) and the Corporate Online Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) are advocating for a strengthened partnership with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to implement extensive awareness campaigns addressing the issues of corruption and financial crimes in Enugu State.
This initiative was discussed during a recent courtesy visit by Martins Chiedozie Ugwu, the Enugu State Coordinator of PCRC, and his team to the Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC Enugu Zonal Directorate, ACE I Aisha Abubakar. During the visit, Ugwu emphasized the purpose of their meeting—seeking collaboration with the EFCC to educate the citizens of Enugu State about the detrimental effects of corruption. "We recognize the urgent need to organize a conference to gather youth leaders from various communities, organizations, and other stakeholders.

We appreciate the extensive responsibilities your agency shoulders, and we are encouraged by your proactive approach to combat economic and financial crimes. Given our common goals, we believe that collaborating with you will significantly contribute to raising awareness and enlisting public support in the fight against corruption in the state," he stated. In response, Abubakar affirmed the Commission's commitment to its preventive mandate. "The EFCC prioritizes sensitization campaigns as part of our obligation to inform the public about the dangers of economic and financial crimes and their societal impacts." She underscored the importance of continuously reminding the public of the necessity to support the Commission in eradicating corruption. Similarly, Clinton Umeh, Chairman of the Corporate Online Chapel of the NUJ in Enugu State, highlighted the urgent need for a stronger partnership with the Commission to inform and deter youth from cybercrimes. "As journalists, we are concerned about the increasing rates of crime. Reporting on these issues can raise skepticism without input from those in security. We want to actively participate in your campaigns, as many young people engaging in criminal activities may lack awareness of the consequences. With proper education and outreach, we could save those who are innocently caught up in these issues," he expressed, adding that their chapel is closely connected with the community through social media. Abubakar appreciated their visit and acknowledged the media's vital role in society, calling the NUJ "critical stakeholders in the fight against corruption." She reaffirmed the Commission's eagerness to strengthen its collaboration with the NUJ. "We are always open to partnerships. Collaboration is fundamental to our mission, and we are committed to preventing economic and financial crimes through awareness and education," she noted. Encouraging the NUJ to share intelligence with the Commission, the Acting Zonal Director mentioned the availability of anonymous reporting channels like the EFCC Eagle Eye application, which allows individuals to report crimes without revealing their identities. "Simply download the app and report any crime confidentially," she advised.
