Following recent nationwide protests against hunger, the prices of food items and cooking gas in Kaduna have surged significantly. This increase has further strained the already tight economic situation for many residents.

Key staples like rice, beans, and yams have seen substantial price hikes. For instance, the price of a 50kg bag of foreign rice has risen from around ₦79,000 to between ₦86,000 and ₦90,000. Yams that previously sold for ₦5,000 per tuber are now going for ₦7,000, and a set of five yams costs ₦28,000. Beans have also seen a sharp rise, with a local measure that once sold for ₦2,000 to ₦2,500 now going for ₦3,500.

The price of cooking gas has also jumped from ₦1,100 per kilogram in July to about ₦1,400 in August. Other essential items like Indomie noodles, garri, and potatoes have all seen similar price increases.

These price hikes have been attributed to several factors, including increased costs at supply depots, transportation challenges, and the scarcity of certain food items. The economic pressure is exacerbated by the declining value of the Naira, making it harder for residents to afford basic necessities.
