We feel unsafe during riots – Nigerians in UK

Nigerians in the UK have expressed concerns about their safety amid the ongoing riots across several cities in the country. The unrest was triggered by misinformation surrounding a tragic knife attack in Southport, which led to the deaths of three young girls. This misinformation has fueled anti-immigrant sentiments, resulting in widespread violence targeting immigrant communities, including Nigerians.

In response, some Nigerians reported feeling unsafe, particularly in areas where the riots have been most intense, such as Middlesborough and Plymouth. There have been reports of attacks on Nigerian homes, and many people have felt compelled to stay indoors for their safety.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, has assured Nigerians that the UK government is committed to ensuring their safety and that of all immigrants. He emphasized that the UK is taking steps to restore order, including the arrest of over 400 individuals involved in the riots. Special courts have been set up to address these cases swiftly.
