North American Nations Begin Submitting Applications to Join the BRICS

Following the forthcoming summit, Cuba, a country in North America, officially filed to join BRICS in October 2024. Cuba's application to join the alliance has been verified by Russian Ambassador Viktor Coronelli.

According to Coronelli, "Cuba has expressed interest in joining the BRICS association." Furthermore, as Russia is hosting BRICS this year, they have already formally applied for partner status with the Russian government. The relevant application has been formalized, and the Cubans have expressed interest," he stated. The other members will now determine whether or not to admit Cuba to the BRICS.

Coronelli disclosed that the bloc dispatched Miguel Díaz-Canel, the president of Cuba, to  go to the summit in 2024. The decision to join BRICS is made by consensus, and admission requires approval from each member country. "We expect the Cuban president to visit Kazan on October 22–24; he has received an invitation. They seem interested in practically every aspect of BRICS activity, but we will have to wait for the decision on partnership status before we can predict how actively they would engage," the ambassador said.
