"Ensuring the Safety of Lagos' Buildings: A Collective Responsibility

Today, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) took a significant step forward in its mission to guarantee the safety and structural integrity of buildings in Lagos. At the National Building Safety and Structural Integrity Initiative (NBSSII) workshop, we launched the Certified Structural Integrity Programme, a pioneering initiative that will see every building in Lagos undergo rigorous testing every five years to ensure they meet the highest safety standards.

The goal is clear: every building in Lagos should be a haven, not a hazard. While we have made notable progress, with the lowest rate of building collapse in two decades recorded this year, we recognize that our work is far from over.

The causes of building collapses are well-documented: inferior materials, inadequate worker qualifications, illegal construction, and lax supervision. To combat these issues, we are implementing stricter building codes, empowering our agencies, and holding all stakeholders accountable. However, safety is a shared responsibility that demands collective action.

We urge every citizen to be vigilant and report any instances of unsafe construction. Similarly, professionals must uphold their ethics and refuse to sign off on work that compromises lives. By working together, we can eradicate building collapses in Lagos and create a safer, more secure environment for all."
